1. Make Sure You Can
Do Without:
Make sure dropping your landline doesn't affect your other
communications services. You might be undoing a 'bundle' discount. You
could lose a promotional price or 'price for life' guarantee on your
connection by canceling or changing your phone service. You may have a
"custom" phone package or a bundle and don't realize how disconnecting
your home phone may affect your Cellular or TV service. Don't forget
you might have a wired house alarm or door answering system. Also, if
other household members or visitors depend on your land line, don't
leave them with no phone service when you leave. |

3. Sign Up With Your
New Alternative:
Check to see if your new service requires a contract. Some alternatives
need a software download. Broadband alternatives often need a piece of
equipment, most supply it for free. If you're using an existing
cellular account, be sure to check your contract. Don't cancel your
home line, yet. If you are transferring your old home phone
number to your new service, let the alternative supplier initiate the
cancellation process. Another
way to keep your old phone number active is to transfer ("port") it to a cheap
cellular phone that you can check from time to time to see if
anyone calls the old number. Credit card companies and pizza shops may
not know you've turned that line into wireless. That phone can alert
you of a new voice mail at another number or by email. |

4. Get Your
Alternative Up & Running:
Make sure it all works the way you thought it would. Now is the time to
reverse your decision, if necessary. Your telephone company will
welcome you back if you want, but there may be a charge if you have
already canceled your old account. |

5. Start the
Cancellation Process for Your Old Service:
If you want to keep the old line connected for a short time, switch to
a more basic or measured plan. You may have unforeseen problems that
may leave you without phone service. You can still answer the old phone
to tell friends of your new calling situation. You might want to use
Call Forwarding if you have a different number for incoming calls. If
you choose now to move your land line number to your new alternative,
most carriers will allow to "port" the old number to your new
wireless number, and they will cancel the old line for you. Double
check Re-Think Your
Wireline. Then, if you feel comfortable about your decision,
kiss your old phone company goodbye.

COST-CUTTING
STRATEGIES: |
|
- UN-BUNDLE
You
might have saved some money by putting all your services together, but
since then the whole package price has risen more than the parts. Try
to get the best price on each of the parts and you've got your own
bundle discount.
- SWITCH
FROM ONE SERVICE TO ANOTHER...AND BACK!
Does
it seem as though new customers get all the deals?
Be a new customer. It is not uncommon to drop your service after 2
years and get something else. Then you get the best offers, and maybe
newer equipment, to switch back. Just the call to disconnect can
significantly improve your deal.
- ASK FOR A BETTER DEAL
Most
services offer a better price just for the asking. Ask your current
provider for a 'promotion' or a 'loyalty plan.' Sometimes the timing is
important and sometimes you need to 'adjust' the services you're
getting. It could be cheaper to switch a package that includes
additional movie channels or calling features than what you have now.
Be sure to check expiration dates and mark your calendar. Check for a
new deal at least yearly.
- BUY
INSTEAD OF RENT
Most
companies want to rent you their equipment by the month. Video Boxes,
Cellular Phones and Modems are sometimes a nice profit item for these
companies. You can buy most of the items you need and eliminate one big
monthly cost. You take on the risk of fixing your stuff if it breaks,
but it's a risk that usually pays off.
- PAY ONLY FOR WHAT YOU NEED
Many
of us pay for things that we just might use
sometime. Don't pay for it until you really need
it. We don't subscribe to the extra sports channels until half way
through Hockey season and we drop movie channels during the summer.
Also,
You might have an extra TV that you only use to watch the news or
broadcast channels. Send back the cable box on that TV and connect it to an antenna.
